Building a UH-12R Hovercraft

PLAINFIELD HOVERCRAFT
BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT MARK

A friend of mine from work "Ken" surprised me and gave me this remote control hovercraft for Christmas. I must admit it is really a challenge to drive (or fly if you prefer) in small areas. In open areas such as outside it is a lot of fun to play with. I have to fight with both of my kids for who's turn it is to play with it.

Another plus about playing with this mini hovercraft is it gives you a feel for how you need to think when you wan to turn the craft. You need to anticipate when to stop the turn so you roll out in the direction you are trying to travel in. Cool!  :-)

Just to break up the rib pictures I thought I would show you some other images.

By popular demand here is a image of the scrap wood I have accumulated so far. Wherever possible I use the scrap pieces to make smaller parts such as the bottom "triangles" for the ribs as mentioned above.

Here is a picture of my little workshop in my basement. The most used tools for this project so far is the zip saw (jig saw), mini drill press with sanding block, and my cordless drill. I use the drill when I need to make a hole to start a cut for the zip saw. The plastic saw horses come in very handy as well.

The 9 inch band saw I use to cut the small pieces such as the "triangles". Long cuts seem to cut faster and straighter with the zip saw.

Here is a picture of a new motor I put on my table saw. My old motor was old and I blew the motor start capacitor when a piece of wood jammed the saw blade as I was cutting a board the other week. Instead of just replacing the capacitor on my old motor my uncle was kind enough to loan me this motor. When I find time (yea right....) I intend to hunt down a newer and larger motor to power my table saw. For now this 3/4 HP will do the trick to cut the stringers for the craft.

See the new belt too!!
